5 Secrets to a Romantic Getaway to Maine

What are the secret ingredients to the perfect romantic getaway to Maine? Our recipe for love requires a little bit of planning and a whole lot of imagination. There’s more to romance than the old standbys of flowers and chocolate. For your getaway to be really special you need to get creative. Follow these simple guidelines and you’re on your way to an unforgettable stay.

Destination is Key: First you must pick the perfect destination. Now we may be just a little bit biased, but for our money you can’t find a more romantic destination than the mid-coast of Maine. With its craggy shoreline and majestic mountains that seem to spill into the sparkling sea, the mid-coast offers up scenery that simply oozes romance. Book the Monhegan Island room at the Newcastle Inn, with its king-size bed, wood-burning fireplace, and view to the gardens and river beyond. Of course, all of the rooms at the Inn are lovely, and each of them could fit the bill, but if you really want to fan the flames of passion, a crackling fire is key.

Timing is Everything: Every season is beautiful in Maine. Simply decide if you want to frolic in the waves, scuffle through falling leaves, or shush down a mountain slope. Valentine’s Day and anniversaries are the perfect excuse for a romantic getaway, but a spontaneous “no reason” escape for two makes it all the more special.

Food is Love: According to Virginia Woolf, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”  Choose wisely when considering where to dine. We recommend the Little Village Bistro in nearby Wiscasset for a cozy dining adventure. Warm and inviting, the menu exudes a certain artful sophistication that signifies that love is an essential ingredient in every presentation. For a lazy afternoon of simple pleasures, you might consider cozying up with a good book, a great cup of coffee, and some sinful pastries at Sherman’s Mid-Coast Bookshop and Café on Main Street in Damariscotta. If you subscribe to the theory that oysters are an aphrodisiac, then stop by King Eider’s Pub for the best oysters in the world.

Indulge a Little: Treat you and your partner to a full day of head-to-toe makeovers at a nearby day spa. Sharing the experience is a surefire way to say “I love you”. Up the fun by taking loads of before, during, and after photos to remember the moment. And if you really want some pampering, schedule a side-by-side couples massage. Then relax by the fire in your room with a bottle of bubbly. Order the “Love is in the Air” package and a dozen roses, a heart-shaped box of chocolates, and a bottle of Prosecco will be waiting for you when you arrive.

Add an Element of Surprise: A thoughtful surprise can add to someone feeling special, cared for, and loved. Try planning an unexpected outing to delight your partner. This is where a little creativity goes a long way. If you know your partner’s passions and inspirations, choosing the right activity should be easy. But here a just a few ideas to spark your imagination.

  1. Take the ferry to Monhegan Island, the island your room was named for (seasonal).
  2. Take an art class together at Kefauver Studio & Gallery
  3. Hike or snowshoe through LaVerna Preserve in nearby Bristol.
  4. Map out a road trip to photograph some of mid-coast Maine’s iconic lighthouses.

Remember, the key to a romantic getaway to Maine starts with a simple plan. At the Newcastle Inn, we’re always here to help if you need a little guidance.
