How to Enjoy Fall Foliage in Maine

Autumn in Maine is a true treat for the eyes and the soul. It’s a time when most of the state lights up with brilliant colors of red, yellow and orange for a show unlike any other. Amidst sightseeing, attending festivals, and simply relaxing, there are many ways to welcome the arrival of cool weather in Damariscotta. Guests at Newcastle Inn enjoy a cozy atmosphere, nestled amongst some of Maine’s most beautiful scenery, particularly during the fall.

When to go

Fall foliage in Maine begins in late September and ends around the last week of October. Peak week for Southern Maine is typically mid to late October. Due to the dependency on weather patterns be sure to check the Maine fall foliage tracker for most up to date information regarding peak season.

Visit a park

Take a drive out to Camden Hills State Park for the day and take in views of the fall colors from the road to the top of Mt. Battie. Or take your tour on foot and hike the trails on Mt. Megunticook and Bald Rock Mountain, both offering spectacular views of the colorful leaves.

Take a hike

Head to the neighboring town of Boothbay to explore the Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve Trail. As you get to the end of the trail, a permeable marshland lays out in front with bright colors of red, yellow and orange saturating the surrounding landscape.

From the water

Part of what makes coastal Maine special is the opportunity to see the colorful fall foliage reflected in the waters of the Atlantic and small coastal harbors. Join Damariscotta River Cruises for their Oyster Farms and Fall Foliage Tour. Take in the beautiful autumn colors and with a narrated tour, complete with a hot apple cider and blankets onboard to keep you warm.

Attend Pumpkinfest and Regatta
