Winter Activities & Events in Mid-Coast Maine

Winter is here! While summer days along the Maine coast are what people look forward to all year long, winter in Maine is a special time of year with snow-dusted sand dunes, glistening lighthouses, festive events, and activities you can only enjoy in the winter, there is no shortage of things to do and see.

Activities

Ice fishing

Experience quintessential Maine in the winter with ice fishing. Riverbend Smelt Camps located along the Cathance River offers shanties for rent that come fully equipped with a stove, wood, electricity, and bait. Smelts are found in the salt waters of Maine and are most commonly caught by ice fishing in the tidal estuaries during the winter months.

Antiquing

While antique shopping can be enjoyed year-round, winter in Maine offers up several opportunities to spend a leisurely day shopping. When you need a break from the cold weather, step inside a cozy antique store and uncover a hidden treasure from your Maine stay.

Snowmobiling

Mid-coast Maine is home to many miles of snow-covered trails, ideal for snowmobiling. Snowmobile Maine is a great resource to find trails, tours, and updates on current conditions.

Winter birdwatching

Maine’s mid-coast offers several notable hot spots for birdwatching. Catch a glimpse of the Red-necked and Horned Grebes at Pemaquid Point or head to Beech Hill Preserve for possible sightings of Snow buntings. Any spot you choose, you are bound to enjoy this relaxing winter activity in Maine.
