Days of Wine and Spirits: Visit Sweetgrass Farm Winery and Distillery

Wine and liquor connoisseurs will enjoy a visit to the Sweetgrass Farm Winery and Distillery during their Midcoast Maine vacation at Newcastle Inn. The winery, which is near Union, about 20 miles north of Newcastle, is part of a family-run farm that overlooks the Medomak River Valley. The winery produces fruit wines made with local fruits such as cranberries, blueberries and apples. In addition to tasting and purchasing wines and some of the spirits distilled on the premises, visitors can hike the farm’s trails and even picnic. The farm supports sustainable agriculture and donates 10 percent of its profits to organizations that support children, families and rural life.

Some of the wines include Oak Reserve Blueberry, Bleujolais, Apple, Cranberry Apple and a Peach wine. The business also makes Back River Gin, made in the London tradition but with the addition of blueberries, giving the gin a refreshing taste. Other spirits made at the farm include cranberry gin, Three Crow Rum, apple brandy, and both cranberry and blueberry bitters.
The winery is closed during the winter and early spring. The new season begins on Mother’s Day, May 11.
